子曰：“事1)君2)尽3)礼4)，人以为5)谄6)也7) 。”

[Mandarin Chinese Reading] Zǐ yuē: “Shì jūn jìn lǐ，rén yǐ wéi chǎn yě.”

[English Translation] The Master said, “In serving the lord, I carry out all the rituals but people regard it as flattery.”

[Modern Chinese Transltion] 孔子说：“服事君主，竭尽礼仪，别人却以为是谄媚。”

1) 事: (shì). to work for, to serve.

2) 君: (jūn). ruler, lord.

3) 尽(盡): (jìn). to exhaust, to use all.

4) 礼(禮): (lǐ). ritual, ceremony.

5) 以为(為): (yǐ wéi). [以A为B] to regard A as B.

6) 谄(諂): (chǎn). to flatter, flattery.

7) 也: (yě). [final particle].

[Mandarin Chinese Reading] Zǐ yuē: “yǐ yuē shī zhī zhě, xiǎn yǐ.”

[English Translation] The Master said, “Those who go wrong by holding back are few.”

[Modern Chinese Transltion] 孔子说：“因约束自己犯过失的人很少。”

1) 约(約): (yuē). father.

2) 失: (shī). to lose, to go wrong.

3) 之1: (zhī). It, that.

4) 者: (zhě). [A者] one who A, those who A.

5) 鲜(鮮): (xiǎn). to be rare, to be few.

6) 矣: (yǐ). [final particle] indicates change of state or completion of an action.

[Mandarin Chinese Reading] Zǐ yuē: “fù mǔ zhī nián, bù kě bù zhī yě. yī zé yǐ xǐ, yī zé yǐ jù.”

[English Translation] The Master said, “The parents' age (the age of parents) should not be ignored. On the one hand, we get joy from it, on the other, we get fear from it.”

[Modern Chinese Transltion] 孔子说：“父母的年纪，不能不知道。一方面因而高兴，一方面因而恐惧。”

1) 父: (fù). father

2) 母: (mǔ). mother.

3) 之2: (zhī). [N1之N2 pattern] → the N1’s N2, the N2 of N1.

5) 可: (kě). to be possible to.

6) 一: (yī). one.

7) 喜: (xǐ). to be joy.

[Mandarin Chinese Reading] Zǐ yuē: “Bú huàn rén zhī bù jǐ zhī, huàn qí bù néng yě.”

[English Translation] The Master said, “(One should say) I don’t worry about others’ not understanding me; I worry about my nonability.”

[Modern Chinese Translation] 孔子说：“不怕没人了解自己，就怕自己没有能力。”

1) 患(huàn): to worry about.  

2) 人(rén): person, people; others, other people.  

3) 之(zhī): [N1之N2 pattern] → the N1’s N2, the N2 of N1. 

4) 己(jǐ): oneself, self.  

5) 知(zhī): to understand, to know, knowledge.  

6) 能(néng): to be able to, can, to be capable, ability.  

7) 也(yě): [final particle]
